Aviators are undoubtedly the most iconic style of sunglasses for guys to wear. With festival season upon us and the summer sun just about out, it's time to ensure you have the hottest shades of the season. This style has been popular since the '60s and drifts in and out of the fashion consciousness, but right now this style is definitely top of the accessory pile. Celebs like Russell Brand, David Beckham and Nelly (below) are all sporting the look and looking hot with it!

From as far away as Indiana, they came, they saw, they gushed. Consisting mostly of women, some children and even fewer men, the line awaiting the arrival of rapper Nelly at Carson's Pirie Scott in North Riverside Mall in North Riverside, Illinois snaked throughout the fragrance and juniors departments, spilling into the mall on June 5, 2010. The rapper was there to promote his new Apple Bottoms fragrance collection, bottles of which he autographed for the first 300 people who made a qualifying purchase of the product. Despite his arriving nearly an hour late to the event, fans spirits were only whetted. In between posing for pictures for anxious fans, he blushed and jokingly chided the flirtatious women heckling him. Quoting a 50-Cent song, one woman yelled, Hey Nelly, have a baby by me: be a millionaire lick your lips again insisted another. Fame Pictures, Inc

So why did aviators become so popular? The link to fighter pilots obviously did a lot for the image and a few famous army generals only helped. There was one movie that made them the height of cool though... Tom Cruise in Top Gun. No character since has owned their style of shades as much as in that movie.

Here I am below modelling some fab men's aviator style sunglasses from Polaroid. The lenses they use eliminate glare and protect your eyes from harmful UV rays which should be high on your list of priorities when choosing a new pair. The styling of this particular pair of aviators is classic with a traditional metal frame. Even though the frames are quite light and thin, the frames felt really sturdy and worth the price tag. I'd still recommend always keeping them in a case though as they are inevitably not as tough-wearing as plastic frames.

Obviously the sizing of these is for men, so they look a bit big on my face. I've given them away to a friend and have to say I don't think there's been anyone who tried them on who they didn't suit. The shape is so classic that it really does go with just about anything, any clothing and any face shape. You won't go wrong to opt for aviators when you go sunglasses shopping this summer.

I just bought my self a new pair of silver aviators during the week actually. I went for the "Smith" as I have never tried on a pair of sunnies that fitted my face better than those.
