GADGET OF THE WEEK - Cybook

Something I have come to learn, is that very few men enjoy reading for pleasure. But men tend to like a gadget, and I apologise for the wild generalisation, but in my experience it is true.

So take this gadget and load up to 1000 books onto it, and read away. No disapproving stares from other train passengers when they see you are reading Harry Potter, or the latest Joan Collins release (I am not judging you).

The one thing that would concern me is battery life, but the manufacturers assure us that this product is great in that department too: they promise 8000 pages worth in fact. The other selling factor is that it is extremely lightweight, which makes it far easier to take with you than a paperback book.

It is still a bit pricey though. I would wait till it comes down in price a bit.

THE GRAPEVINE - Bad Guys get the Girls

Photo Credit: Thomas Hawk on flickr.com

Ever wondered why nice guys finish last? Turns out it could actually be an evolutionary strategy. Studies conducted by New Mexico State University and Bradley University have revealed what we secretly all knew. Bad guys get more girls.

The findings revealed by New Scientist magazine centre on 3 personality traits which are collectively know as the dark triad. These are: the self-obsession of narcissism; the impulsive, thrill-seeking and callous behaviour of psychopaths; and the deceitful and exploitative nature of Machiavellianism.

The studies show that those who have the traits are more likely to have had more partners, and are also more likely to want short term relationships. They are also more likely to poach a partner from another man.

Could this be you? I know that I have been attracted to all three traits in the past, even though the sensible side in me knows that it doesn't make much sense in the long run.

WEBSITE OF THE WEEK - Look Mantastic

Not just a great title, but also a one stop shop for male grooming. This website is especially useful if you are repulsed by the idea of going down to Boots and fighting your way through the throng of pushchairs, old ladies and teenagers to get what you want.

The product range is immense, from high end brands to budget must haves, the store has everything a man could need. You can also search for special offers or browse the site blog and other articles for inspiration.

HINTS, TIPS, TRICKS - A Sparkling Smile

Photo Credit: Jakob Lodwick on flickr.com

Teeth are one of the first things I notice about another person, and I am not the only one who thinks a good smile is important. Keeping your teeth in good condition is not just a key aspect of attractiveness, it is a must for long term health. Here are some tips for a gleaming grin...

  • We are encouraged to brush for 2 minutes, twice a day with a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Change your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles are tatty.
  • Don't brush your teeth straight after a fizzy drink, this can cause the acid to eat away at the enamel. Instead drink water, or rinse and if you do need to brush, wait about an hour.
  • Choose a brush with a smaller head as this will be able to reach all your teeth, including those at the back of the mouth.
  • Brush your tongue too, this will help to keep your breath fresh. You can even get tongue scrapers specially designed for the job.
  • Go for regular check ups with your dentist. You can join a dental or health program like HSA to spread the cost of any treatment you may need. This is what I do, and it is so easy.
  • If you want to avoid stains the worse offenders are tea, coffee, coke, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, cranberry juice and tomato sauce. And worse than all of these is smoking! Extra visits to the dentist to clean the teeth will help.
  • I recommend Beverly Hills formula toothpastes as good, everyday whitening products. It will not reverse stubborn stains, but is great at prevention. Also try Dentyl mouthwashes, expensive, but you will feel the difference.

DESIGNER - LL Cool J

It seems rap artists cannot help but get involved in the clothing industry these days. Vogue revealed that LL Cool J has recently teamed up with US department store Sears to create a collection of casual wear which it is hoped will make up to $150 million profit in the first year.

Rap artists are notorious for getting street trends followed by the masses, but the Sears range hopes to have real mainstream appeal, with collections for women and children as well as men.

LL Cool J says "My main concern with juniors is to make sure the fit is right. The fabrics have to feel nice on a woman's body, but sizing and fit are very important. I know that if she comes in, puts it on and it doesn't fit, she won't come back."

I look forward to seeing how the clothes look!
